MEETING WITH YAB TUN DR MAHATHIR MOHAMAD, PRIME MINISTER, 27 AUGUST 2018

MEETING WITH YAB TUN DR MAHATHIR MOHAMAD, PRIME MINISTER, 27 AUGUST 2018

The Chamber’s memorandum entitled “Consultation & Cooperation with the Government of Malaysia” was well received by Tun. In addition, our delegation also urged Tun to focus on some of the critical issues with regard to the development of Sarawak which is now lagged behind as compared to many other states in Malaysia. On the issue of oil royalty, one of Tun’s greatest concerns is the survival of Petronas. Sabah too posted several issues and recommendations to YAB Tun, in particular the lop-sided policies against Sabah such as the cabotage.

To help address loss of revenue to Government, we proposed for the setting up of a Special Multi-Agency Task Force (SMAT Force) in order to curb increase of illicit products in the market in recent years. Tun assured that he has certain power to make changes. He wants to hear more form MICCI.

Tun stressed that the Government is always keen to promote investment. Foreign direct investment (FDI) was indeed the brainchild of Malaysia introduced way back in the 80s by YAB Tun himself. FDI, as Tun emphasised is crucial for jobs creations and upgrading of skill sets.

Private sector means a lot to the new government particularly in terms of contribution to tax revenue and the government needs cooperation from the businesses, as this is where wealth and jobs are created, said Tun. In view of the damages brought by the previous regime, Tun assured that democracy will be restored and rules of the law are to be followed. Tun stressed on the importance of good practices vis-a-vis Japan Incorporated and is eager to bring back into the system some of the good principles, including good governance, democratic government and no abuse of power.
