MICCI applauds Government in delaying Act 446

In line with our goals as a chamber which aims to facilitate and support businesses, MICCI has advocated for the extension of Workers’ Minimum Standards of Housing and Amenities Act 1990 (Act 446) until December 2021. This gives companies more time to recover from the financial constraints caused by the pandemic.

MICCI supports the extension for the enforcement of Act 446 and would like to express our gratitude to the government in their efforts to assist companies during these difficult times by delaying the compliance of Act 446.

It is vital that workers are protected through this act and employers have enough time to ensure as such. The decision made by the Minister of Human Resource, YB Datuk Seri M. Saravanan to relax the implementation that governs the workers’ housing standard is one that MICCI stands by.

However, companies are urged to start preparing now instead of waiting until the end of the year to commence construction on workers housing.

MICCI maintains that the one size fits all International Labour Organisation (ILO) conditions are more western culture derived and may not be culturally suitable for the Southeast Asian region.

Once again, MICCI stands behind the government’s decision on Act 446 and is deeply appreciative of their commitment to aiding businesses during this time.
