MICCI Media Release: Protecting Livelihood is Protecting Lives - 25th May 2021

The Malaysian International Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MICCI) would like to thank the Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin for taking the courageous decision to protect livelihood which will protect lives. The PM recognises that economic activities provides government with the revenues needed to protect lives by providing the continued medical facilities, vaccines, financial assistance and employment for the rakyat.

MICCI previously released a statement on the 19th of May 2021 against the full lockdown style, suggesting instead for a faster vaccination programme and a joint effort between the private and public sector.

MICCI believes that the introduction of a 40% work from home rule is the balance needed to curb the spread of COVID-19 while ensuring that businesses remain operational, and employees have a way to earn a living during these trying times.

The PM advised those who were questioning why there was no full lockdown this time around to stay at home and encourage others to do the same where possible. He also stated that people conducting their own lockdown can help to break the chain of infections.

MICCI urges businesses to adhere to the SOPs in place to ensure the safety of everyone and where possible to extensively limit the movement and exposure of its employees. The people, by their own free will, must adopt the “kita jaga kita” mentality to protect each other. Keeping businesses open does not mean we cannot all self-observe SOPs to break the chain.

The high case figures in the last week is due to the aggressive testing undertaken by the states such as Selangor and should not be taken as an indication that the cases are trending.

MICCI and its members supports the Prime Minister and his team for taking a rational factual decision instead of one of sentiment to be politically correct.
